Seems to me we've got a slight design lag with browsers and other utility programs. Even as far back as 2000, 3D computer games were extremely common and becoming the norm. Still, today the world of programs and websites is primarily flat.

I don't mean to say that a full 3d experience would be superior. But features that utilize 3d or persistent world elements (imagine if your tabs were organized spatially in anything other than a straight line) would potentially revolutionize browsing, and also make it suck less.

Yeah, but fuck ads & tracking. They're a huge part of the problem with browsing (and with why it feels simultaneously addictive and frustrating). Edging out any form of browser-side technological innovation through hardware load and perverse incentives is a big contributor, IMO.

I've played far too many games to agree. I can walk blindfolded from one end of a game world to another, even if that takes two hours in real time. I can't do any of that with a browser. I'm always stuck looking for the right landmark ("what was that page with the link again?").

Yeah, an effort like this would tear out large parts of website infrastructure as it exists today, in favor of something less sterile. On one hand, this is a ridiculously vast and possibly impossible project. On the other, something like it will probably happen eventually.
