The orientation is the opposite: it isn't OK for journalists to prevaricate on dissidents, artists etc. being murdered. The tribal response to journalists being murdered highlights a lack of principled reporting through contrast. It isn't bad in itself.

Many of the people calling for sanctions against Saudi Arabia now, for killing a journalist, defendes it in the past. This prior defence of a muderous, medieval theocracy was the problem, as is the implied lack of regard for non-journalists. This ain't complicated.

The same press that largely ignored MBS's bloody coup, ignores the war against Yemen he presides over (with US support) is up in arms over #Kashoggi Yemen is a genocide. No, it is not OK for journalists to take an interest in Saudi Arabia only now.

Journalists aren't under fire for doing their jobs in (correctly) recognizing the murder of a journalist as an attack on freedom of the press. They're under attack for not doing their jobs on topics of far greater importance.
