Seems to me that people think too much because going very long without thought is utterly disorienting and oftentimes really unpleasant.

With thought: "I should do this because that, oh my what was that I forgot earlier? Oh, right, I need to-" Without thought: "Body big, body small. Shaking. Weird tremor. Moving forward. See stairs. Stairs flat. Getting smaller, getting smaller OH GOD SO TINY. Oh stairs normal..."

It's pretty much impossible to describe not thinking verbally. Text naturally translates into thought material, as does personal language, but I'm basically trying to describe different sense inputs and feelings here.

A stair really can look completely 2D from far away. Walking down a corridor without *thinking* about anything, you sometimes feel like you're shrinking into the far wall, sometimes like you're extending backwards, or like you're on an autowalk.

Then as you get closer, the stair sort of stretches in front of you into this diagonal 3D thing from the former 2D representation. It can get a bit nauseating.

All those weird heuristics that make you see visual illusions, all the sensory autofill that makes up much of your conscious experience, is there all the time. It's not just an interesting collection of experimental findings - you can experience it yourself if you pay attention.
