I'm sure there are conditions, cultures and circumstances where this does not apply as much, but: In my limited experience any sort of awakening should be accompanied by subtle-to-massive release of tension somewhere in the body.

For me, that's absolutely the case. I get the impression from talking to others that it's a common enough reason. Besides wanting siddhis, or weird religious reasons.

what I find interesting is how many people might be trying to become enlightened to resolve a tension in the body that doesn't even rise to the level of the conscious

I was just thinking of tweeting out something related. It feels like a lot of these mini-awakenings could be accomplished by just locating this tension in the body and letting it release, or exercising it out. But to do that, you'd have to be aware of it - and it's habitual...
