Again, pragmatism. Let's just agree that we cannot ultimate escape some kind of programming. Now we can ask, is this programming helping us to thrive, individually and as a species? If not, what can we tweak?

I did not find it devastating. And it is not the only way to do it. I did it once when I realized I could do nothing to help myself. I did it another time when I realized that I didn't need to. In both cases, it was good. We may not be talking about the same thing.

and the question is whether you can have this on demand. It is a very specific mental state, in which you are not grasping at any sense objects, at all. I am reasonably sure that it is a state that can be regularized. "Defeat" is just one way to get it by "mistake".

So, one example of a 'defeat' practice that I do now is to imagine my worst possible fears, let them overcome me without resistance. Of course this is different than what @Failed_Buddhist is talking about, but I am familiar with that too from my religious days.
