I'm not Irish, but for me it's fascinating as I've known more than one guy who was more or less exactly like that. Seeing all the shit they've never been compelled to say come out under pressure is both deeply revolting and sort of fascinating. A glimpse of profound malice.

As for why so many people are noticing... it seems to me like Americans are uniquely incapable of shutting up about their own politics. Filtered the name and "hearing" because everyone was tweeting it out, and I'm still getting a bunch of tweets that assume you know the context.
