So, I understand the basis for the argument some people are making to shun Trump supporters for life.
But do these people understand that outside the bubble of the US, they've just implied 90% of adult Americans should receive the same treatment internationally?

Let me tell you, I was SO GLAD to be mistaken for Not An American most of the time in Barcelona this spring.

Yeah. 'Merican-directed bigotry is on the rise, basically everywhere.
And, unfortunately, not without reason.

No doubt. My former fluency in French had me mispronouncing Catalan like a French speaker would, things like final consonants that are voiced in English and Catalan but not French.
More than 1 person was incredulous that I was an American when I fessed up. Linguistic camouflage

Yeah. Happens to me all the time. I grew up around 4 or 5 languages. Even spoke some Swahili as a toddler.
My pronunciation is almost always near-native, even if I know 10 words
Only, I get too much credit for being from Norway, so not sure it's to my advantage to sound local.

Concerning the Serbian border guard? Yeah, virtually every Serb I know hates NATO...
It was about 2am, and my girlfriend was laid on her back, resting. The guard actually kicked her to get her up, saying it was disrespectful to lay on Serbian soil.
Doesn't matter how tired you are, you don't talk back to an angry Serbian guard holding an assault rifle lmao.

Of course, it is a rare case where the country getting bombed was actually committing the atrocities they were accused of.
All of which is 0 excuse for bombing Belgrade, of course.

I made the mistake of walking into the centre of Novi Sad with a headscarf on. I had no hat, and it was 40C.
In a way, I'm grateful for my ignorance in that moment.
It was a glimpse into a world a million miles away from the usual privileged experience of a white, male Brit.
