I've lived in central Europe for about six years.
Nobody gives a fuck that I'm "white". I've been threatened, assaulted, stereotyped and otherwise treated like crap far more times than I'd like to admit.
Would it be worse if I had a darker complexion? No doubt. But it still is.

Why am I this pissed off?
I've spent six years learning the culture and language and trying my best to, on some level, integrate locally here.
With the upsurge of nationalism, the racism has gotten much worse. I'd say it's two or three times worse than it was two years ago.

At this rate, I could foresee it becoming very difficult to live here within even just a year or two. It's already *really bad*.
I can't imagine the pain refugees have to go through, knowing many of them are here because of our dumbass political choices - and then getting this.

A Swedish colleague of mine back in Prague had been together with a Czech girl for about four or five years (back at the time I lived there).
He'd been beaten up by Czechs for "daring" to date one of "their" women about three or four times in that time.

Thing is, people are convinced it's "not that bad," or "it will get better soon"...
... but the mechanisms they propose are things like an imaginary resurgence of social democracy, or EU crisis management (big laugh).
It's exactly the sort of wishful thinking people engage in when they know things are going to shit, but can't see what to do about it.

The EU is actively feeding the situation by pouring all kinds of prettily-phrased invective at Poland and Hungary (and soon, probably, Slovakia and the Czech Republic).
But their own power base is getting more populist-nationalist by the year. They are fighting the tide.
