I unironically wonder if global pandemic is as close as we're getting to a fighting chance. We're at levels of embedded corruption that do resemble early medieval Europe. The Black Death really did a number on the power brokers back then. But we are also interdependent now...

Sometimes I look at all this and I wonder why I'm still messing around with sideshows like linguistics. Doomer fatigue, maybe.

Hey man, already I ditched the "stable career" of customer service to do linguistics. It's definitely incredibly difficult to just learn on the fly, though hard to say what effect, if any, it's had on my IQ.

Not sure what you mean by "IQ". Verbal IQ is only about 50% of the equation. I should know. If verbal IQ was everything, my own IQ would be at least one standard deviation higher...

Short of brain damage, malnutrition or the like, IQ remains relatively constant (it's standardized by age group, so it's not really affected by aging as such). Actual intelligence declines with age in most people, though. IQ is a relativistic measure.

Yeah, but now you're describing resource allocation moreso than resource availability. G is suspect. Doesn't mean you magically gain 15 IQ points by doing certain things. Well, maybe you can, but it's certainly not substantiated anywhere. Except as the inverse of deprivation.
Replying to and
If you are poor, malnourished or chronically stressed, this does seem to have a big short-term impact on IQ. It's probable there is a (much smaller) long-term effect as well. (I'm a huge nerd on this topic, so forgive my indulging a bit.)

Lots of things would be more universal and/or useful than IQ. Problem is nobody has been able to develop any other metric that doesn't collapse under the slightest pressure.
