I unironically wonder if global pandemic is as close as we're getting to a fighting chance. We're at levels of embedded corruption that do resemble early medieval Europe. The Black Death really did a number on the power brokers back then. But we are also interdependent now...

Hey man, already I ditched the "stable career" of customer service to do linguistics. It's definitely incredibly difficult to just learn on the fly, though hard to say what effect, if any, it's had on my IQ.

Short of brain damage, malnutrition or the like, IQ remains relatively constant (it's standardized by age group, so it's not really affected by aging as such). Actual intelligence declines with age in most people, though. IQ is a relativistic measure.
