i started pursuing programming as a career for money reasons. i wanted financial stability for myself and my family. not because it was my passion. there’s no shame in that and fuck the gatekeepers who say otherwise!

Many nerdy hobby companies have a social hierarchy where you won't get promoted unless you spend lotsa time in work-based social groups. Those people who are willing to not only come to work but also spend half their week off work with co-workers? They also work overtime. A lot.

If you can payroll X people or X-1, 2 or 4 people while exploiting the rest for extra hours, it's considerably cheaper to go with option two. Unethical and extremely dubious from a quality control perspective? Sure, but the people in charge of that decision just want revenues.

I am reading that tweet as a critique off, e.g., "do you code in your free time?", and offering my own. And it doesn't have to be fair, since questions like that aren't ethical to begin with.
