Heh, the Poles have definitely endured worse.
First the country was utterly wrecked by the Nazis, left as a bargaining chip by the allies to avoid prolonging the war, maintained in its ravaged state by the Communists (with all the psyops that implies).

The US, for all the rampant cruelty of its leaders, at least won the war and had 10-20 years of pretty great levels of prosperity (for some).
Poland hasn't had that since the inter-war period. And that was under a military dictator.
