IMO, yep. Every major advance has been preceded by violent disruption, because power resists major advances almost without exception. Bhutan's pre-emptive switch from absolute monarchy to democracy is one of the exceptions that prove the rule.

It's an unfortunate state of affairs. Hopefully, coddled rulers of today's west will have a weaker tolerance for disruption than in past. They better do. The New Deal came after decades of violence against the rich & imminent threat of violent revolt. We don't have that time.

Was gonna ask you about that. I figured it was referring to someone in particular. Obviously there's never one exception, when talking about all of history. I'll look him up.

I don't think crediting him alone for Athenian democracy, but without his reforms it would have been a rather pointless endeavor. & every autocrat who did anything good did so w/reforms. They have no other path by which to effect progress, though obviously they don't always do.
