I don't follow football, as you know, but every sport I've ever followed had mental gymnastics BS going on whenever something like this happens.

E.g. I follow a lot of esports games, where the default is always that either Europe or S. Korea, sometimes China, dominates that particular game.
Yet US fans always act like they're robbed when one of their teams make a lucky run before getting curbstomped in quarters/semis.
