Our eyes don't see what is there. Not even close. Here is a thread full of the ridiculous hacks our eyes and brains make to create a sense of complete and continuous vision.

You want to know something about how bullshit insane our brains are? OK, so there's a physical problem with our eyes: We move them in short fast bursts called "saccades", right? very quick, synchronized movements. The only problem is: they go all blurry and useless during this

The human brain and sensory networks have evolved to make you survive and breed, not to create an accurate representation of the world around you.

Yeah this stuff is fascinating science. It's also old news. I wish people would come to terms with it in a sane way, but that's also outside the framework of our standard code. Massively so, as biases had (and still have!) connections to traits that confer survival advantages.

Biases keep humanity alive. Example: the common bias where a man sees an attractive woman and automatically assumes she wants him. Evolutionary advantage: he is going to be more likely to confidently approach her, making procreation more likely. It's dead simple.

Sometimes it's dead simple. Often they are side-effects. Something useful involves compromise elsewhere -> compromise leads to (less relevant) defects -> defects accompany spread of useful trait. Sometimes the environment changes and the defects become major problems. Die-off.
