A basic asymmetry between far left and far right is that they fight for different different things at different Maslow levels. Far right fights for recognition at love/belonging/esteem levels, far left for material necessity at physiological/security level.

The claim that far right positions are linked to self esteem issues rather than material ones, and so cannot be solved by any external solutions does ring true to me

There is correlation. In other words, when your life sucks, and you feel hopeless financially, you move to other issues. But if you make their lives more hopeful, over time they shift away from those self esteem issues.

People who are focused on a hopeful future don't tend to fall into right wing stuff, or fundamentalism. It's not 100%, but it's enough, and those who stay there tend not be as radical/dangerous.

Also, if you have a functioning society, they tend not to be very relevant. In Norway, the "right wing" are neolibs who don't want to pay tobacco and alcohol taxes or road tariffs. Well, them and the neo-nazis. All 500 of them.
