Worth close reading. I recall landing in Norway during the winter some years back & noting icy slipperiness of a downward walkway. I remarked that in USA, such wouldn't be allowed, as people would fall & sue. My friends explained 'here, people are just careful' twitter.com/alexandraerin/

I've also found it's extremely difficult to find people quicker on their feet than those who have grown up in Northern Norway. Ice everywhere half the year will do that for you.

I'm sure every culture and locale has these tiny, exceptional things that become normalized, so people take them for granted 'til they leave. I'm always surprised at how easily people fall. It's bizarre. (Also, I nearly faint in anything remotely like hot weather.)
