something counterintuitive: someone reading a book or watching a movie and absorbed in a story is more "in the now" than someone trying to be "in the now."

as soon as you are told to do something, you become self-conscious about it that defeats the whole intent.

Yeah, which is something almost everybody knows. Yet teachers so rarely reach for the obvious metaphors.
