I've been dancing around the edge of it for a long time, but it seems it's a while since I passed into the second part of the old aphorism:
"Once begun, best to finish."

It's not only about that. I just recently got my meditation practice fully working again after a long period of half-assed practice.
Total transformation while it's there. It's probably one of the few things in life I'm genuinely good at. But it changes everything else, too.

I noticed a correlation lately between days my meditation practice...lagged, shall we say, to be generous...and the length/depth of any depressive episodes in my life day to day

Yeah... it really does seem to be so. If you have those sorts of problems, it becomes a prophylactic (I do, too).
