In all four cases, I'd ask why the earlier work can show so much heart if the later work is going to be so heartless (or at least cynical?)

I think they all *still* have it, to be honest.
Lovecraft is one of my fav. writers. He was also a pretty terrible person. Doesn't make his passion for New England architecture less authentic.

Taleb and Peterson have some fairly gross character flaws, but you can still see them operate within the saner parts of their own personas as well.
Just because you do some shitty things, doesn't mean your entire character is tainted through and through.

Fair points, all. It is interesting, though, how the early work shows the highest Quality (term of art from Prisig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintence), the most humility, and the most focus on domains they actually know.
