You take this to mean “be guarded in what you say.” The more accurate lesson, intentionally or not, is “always prepare your spirit to be resolute against the judgement of others.”
In this guy’s case the only way to prepare for the people he dealt with would be to abandon his old life and move to the country. Nothing wrong with that in principle.
