Well, you historians are ignoring grammar :). Written, A Historic is clearly different than Ahistoric. There is also a matter of context.
So, it should be written "a historic" but pronounced "an historic?" The correct pronunciations of "a" are "eh," "ah," and "an"?

Perhaps if you are giving a speech, you could a modifier to differentiate. Even "A very historic" clarifies, yet is grammatically correct. You could also say "An extremely historic," if you want to use "an." :)
