It’s like we have a generation that grew up after journalism and investigation into institutions died. There is just no concept that pushing spokespeople into either not commenting or allaying fears on the record is the thing that makes journalism worthy of special protection.
The institutions of journalism have decayed. Credibility once came from following best practices. Eventually the reputations of the institutions became sufficient to command trust. At that point, they stopped following best practices and simply relied on their reputation.
