I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that your parents benefited from free public school for you. Would it have been more helpful to have termed it: 'property tax financed primary schooling'. We don't talk about free police and fire protection yet it is free to the user.
Phrasing it that way might help people understand the reality of it. But you have hit another relevant point, public schools are locally funded and administered. Sanders’ proposals are all for centralized, federal programs which are less efficient and less accountable.
