Actually, no, it doesn’t. It does so only in a world in which one can invest the $306k, have no source of income and yet still afford to while one’s days away surfing. If I pretend that I have zero expenses, then I can have a pretty spectacular pretend life.
Non-investment related expenses are irrelevant to calculating the return on investment. Objectively, the average return on investment from a mutual fund is better than that from a college degree.

Accurate. Now calculate the return on this hypothetical student’s ROI if she invested 100% of after tax earnings over the same period. Since we are excluding expenses let’s do apples to apples.

To anticipate your objection, feel free to account for the cost of debt service and then devote all remaining cash after debt service to either payment of additional principal or to investment. But not living expenses in this hypothetical world.
