We all make mistakes. Defending his rights was the correct thing to do. Defending his character or his ideas? That's a different story.
A society containing some members who express intolerant philosophies is not the same as an intolerant society. For example, you advocating intolerance for ideas with which you disagree is not evidence that society is intolerant. The paradox is false.

You should revisit some of Orwell’s works. The bad guys were the ones against free speech. It’s not about being vague, it’s about the principle in question. You and the Nazis agree on restricting free speech. I oppose you and the Nazis in favor of freedom and reason.
