I actually think another lesson here is this: the DOT should have introduced a bolder plan that would have energized more supporters, faster. 4 to 3 road diets are good, but this plan could have better - and it would have helped, not hurt, the politics.

There's a lot of misconceptions about safe streets organizing, so consider this: It took 20 months, multiple elected letters & rally w/ families of victims of fatal crashes to get to implement this basic redesign that, b/c of the turn bays, actually SPEEDS traffic.

Thank you for doing the right thing, . That you should even have to override a community board is proof that the current system of making our streets safer isn’t working. We look forward to working together to fix that system.

"The ambitious new design for 14th Street is the right solution for a congested corridor in a part of the city where a small fraction of people drive, and could easily be replicated on other streets where buses move at walking speeds."

After sustained advocacy by community members, transportation advocates & myself, DOT will be moving ahead with plans for the Grand St. redesign. I am thrilled that our community will finally get what it needs: a permanent bike lane designed w/ the safety of cyclists in mind.

The dreaded Bedford/Rogers “mixup.” Only most skilled cyclists can navigate. Very dangerous because it’s at end of fast downhill section on road. Weak point for entire bike network. There should be a two way protected lane along length of Bedford.

That said, as begins to "modify the protected lanes to help accommodate the needs of industrial businesses [on Grand between Waterbury & Vandervoort]", we must ensure that these yet-to-be-installed bike lanes are *physically protected* >

NYC will pilot an experimental new transit improvement on 14th St - Transit/Truck Priority Lanes - and make permanent the lane improvements made in advance of the on Grand St in Brooklyn & 12th/13th Sts in Manhattan. :

Map showing Manhattan's 14th St's new regulations for Transit and Truck Priority (all other vehicles, local access only) between 9th Ave and 3rd Ave and Standard Bus Lanes (with adjacent general traffic lane) between 3rd and 1st Aves and westbound from 8th to 9th Ave.
