Every year, transgender people gather for #TDoR to mourn those lost to violence. Hate crimes committed against transgender people have risen each year for the past three years, and at least 26 transgender and gender non-conforming people have been murdered this year.

Much of this violence falls disproportionately on trans people of color, particularly Black trans women. To make matters worse, countless other acts of violence go unreported by police and the press who frequently misidentify the victims and alienate their communities. #TDoR

In recognition of the lives lost, ceremonies across the country will read aloud the names of transgender people murdered in the previous year. Today, NCTE recommits ourselves to fighting for the life-saving change that has come too late for too many. Their memories #WontBeErased.
