I stopped reading bc tbh this became rambling after a bit, but I mean. Gamers were often introverts. Introverts got bullied. Kids don't know correlation does not imply causation. And this whole thread smacks of "WELL I DIDN'T EXPERIENCE THAT SO I DON'T BELIEVE OTHERS COULD HAVE"

I didn't mean to say that it never literally happened. What I meant was that games were not the actual reason and yeah kids don't know that, and that's the problem. Games were hardly uncool, and people acting like they were is why "gamer" is a harmful identity now

It's more complicated Video games were much more a "boy" toy at the time. Gender comes into play because boys were mocked by girls and derided by parents for playing them "I don't want to date a loser who plays games all day" "You'll never amount to anything playing games"

Toxic masculinity is only one component of a very complex issue, bottom line is gamers are rebelling against people who they perceive oppressed them and as children those tended to be "girls" and "parents". The parents are out of reach but the girls aren't.

For the most part though just about everyone I know who has a "gamer" identity doesn't give a shit about any of it and just wants to play games. The politics of it aren't of interest.

As with just about any hotbed issue it's a minority who are vocal and the majority don't give a care. This was the case when I played world of warcraft. Hell, I came out as trans at the very end when I quit and tbh nobody blinked.

Did / do gamers get bullied by jocks? Well, yes, gamers were introverts and nerds and those get bullied. And people who play games a lot, more often tend not to get exercise and are obese or have other issues they'll get bullied for.

The bullies are envious of the privilege the nerds have in affording games. Or they may see games as the reason behind the obesity or health issues and thus reject them. So in a way the gamers tended to get targeted from many angles. No shock they're malcontents.

There's no one step fix. No ad campaign or therapy path will fix this. Every kid got marginalized by different oppressors for different reasons and the community will have to turn around as a whole and say "this isn't okay" to perpetuating toxic masculine stereotypes.

But there's the underlying nihilism which debases any attempt to knock them. I did a thread on this exact topic too a week ago. The reaction to the last Jedi shows it's growing beyond just gamers instead of being course corrected.https://twitter.com/TotallyLeggit/status/955650237506379776?ref_src=twcamp%5Eshare%7Ctwsrc%5Em5%7Ctwgr%5Eemail%7Ctwcon%5E7046%7Ctwterm%5E3 …

The fact #incel is a thing is a total marker some people see their situation, which is literally just be a bit more assertive and self caring, as impossible.
