Most of assume wealthy is some one with vast sums, houses, cars etc. We readily accept 5% We don't see it as us when we see ourselves as middle class.

Excellent article I do think one of the issues is politicians keep conflating wealth and income when attacking tax cuts e.g’ tax cuts for millionaires’ and justifying tax increases ‘billionaires being the problem’ people earning £80k see themselves in neither category

The implication, as suggested by IFS, is that middle income earners like me, well below the magical £80,000, will be taxed till pips squeak for Labour to fund its promises. As you suggest, this may well come from new wealth tax. So someone like me may have to sell my London home.

At last a rational and insightful contribution to this media storm. It demonstrates the total disconnect between many people’s headline salary, true relative income and their actual quality of life. The guy doesn’t see himself as rich, because in real terms, he ain’t.

It is a sad country that thinks earning £80K working 48 hours a week is classified as rich. No wonder we are in the doldrums. The champagne socialists have driven away the wealth creators.

And now Labour are saying they want to screw the 'Super Rich' earner even more. His earnings over £80k will be taxed at 45% and over £125k at 50%. The £150k earner will now face an even bigger tax bill of maybe 47% of £140k=£65,800. Why they bother is beyond me

On taxing wealth, you could have added that Lab (& LDs & Greens) have all vowed to tax income from wealth at the same level as income from work, as well as crack down on avoidable, evasion & reliefs. Burgon failed to mention it at a crucial moment, but Labour are on top of this
