We want to recognize all the individuals who volunteer for the Topeka Police Department including Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), Citizens Academy Ambassadors and TPD Chaplains. In 2022, these individuals donated 6,772 hours of their time. Thank you volunteers!

Chief Wheeles and leaders also recognized two citizens, Jacob and Quilan McClure, for their brave actions in helping victims trapped in a vehicle during a rollover crash.

Earlier today, TPD held its annual awards ceremony, recognizing the heroic actions of sworn & civilian staff in 2022. A special congrats goes to Ofc. Kahler for being selected as the Officer of the Year, & Crime Analyst Tiffany Baker, the Civilian of the Year for 2022.

Are you prepared for traveling in the cold weather? Having a plan and an emergency kit in your vehicle is essential to help prevent disaster. Make sure you keep your gas tank over ½ full, and have a kit with the following:

Corporal David Gogian had served with the TPD 12 years as a Reserve Officer. Then an additional 8 years as a full time Officer. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. Officer Jeff Atherly had served with the TPD for almost two years. He is survived by a son.

Today we honor and remember Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly for the ultimate sacrifice. Ten years ago, on December 16, 2012, Officer Jeff Atherly and Corporal David Gogian were killed while investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle.
