What I've learned is how quickly stereotypes spread in a room without a Native person where white folks confirm each other's stereotypes abt Native ppl as fact. It gets esp uncomfortable when I see discussions abt totems & animal guides cause that's breeding ground for this stuff

One of the main issues is people approaching this with a "what can this do for me" attitude "my experience" "me" "I" instead of having a willingness to learn from the ground up over years as most of us would in any belief system. Instead it's "This Native belief confirms MY exp."

The whole spirit animal thing even comes from the Anishinaabe Bimaadizi (way of life), and even then, the point was to simplify abstract concepts and encourage compassion. I’m currently writing a post on The Seven Sacred teachings if you wanna read when I post it!

Omg I've had the same experiences but in regards to Indian traditions. Like I think white people's obsession on Indian spirituality pushed me away from learning any of it .

Yeah I have a lot a lot a lot of thoughts about this. I grew up in the Methodist Church. Same toxic Southern Christianity as the rest of rural NC. People can't wrap their head around it.
