  1. So I'm looking forward to my trip back to Hamburg 🇩🇪on Thursday. I think now is a good time to remake my connections with the city, though maybe I'll find something more exciting than knitting wool to bring back as a souvenir. /End

  2. She went on to spend the rest of her life in England (without doing any knitting) and now resides in the local churchyard, with my mum and dad at rest nearby. /11

  3. Incidentally, my Oma settled into English life and became a popular figure in the village, despite having next to no English. Here she is chatting up old Mr Hoy from the farm. /10

  4. I returned home, a broken figure, confidence shattered. My busking days were over. My mum returned only later. She apologised for setting me up, but not in a therapeutic Boy Named Sue kind of way (the world is tough and if you're gonna survive...) /9

  5. Audience duly assembled, the customs guy launched his punch line: "Like our knitting, do we, sir?" Harwich had never seen such hilarity. The story of the boy with the balls of wool spread round the port and beyond. 🧶 /8

  6. I flipped open the old suitcase and to my absolute horror saw that it was packed full of balls of wool. The customs guy burst out laughing 🤣 summoned his entire team, all the queuing passengers, the coffee bar staff and the ferry captain and his whole crew to have a look. /7

  7. His professional interest was aroused, and he asked me to open the suitcase. At this point my curiosity was at least equal to his, as I had absolutely no idea what my mum had packed the case with. /6

  8. I took the ferry from the Hook of Holland to Harwich. On arrival at UK customs, I caught the eye of the border bloke, doubtless thanks to my wannabe hippy appearance matched with incongruous 1950s suitcase. Needless to say... /5

  9. My mother stayed behind in HH to get her mum back from the hospital, and I set off back to England alone. Before I left, my mother handed me a battered old suitcase to take back as I had a spare hand (I only travelled hippy-style with rucksack and guitar in those days). /4

  10. So, I spent a week in HH being not much help to my mother. I bravely did some busking at the railway station. And I remember boxing up old bits of jewellery rescued from the ruins of my grandmother's former home. They were black with soot from the firestorms of WWII. /3

  11. Mind you, my last visit ended in humiliation.😳It was in 1977 and I was doing my A levels. My elderly grandmother had broken her hip and was laid up in hospital. Mum and I set off to Hamburg to sort out her flat so she could come back to live with us in England... /2

  12. Looking forward to enjoying my birthday present of a few days away with Mrs T. When she asked where I'd like go, I said Hamburg. 🇩🇪❤️ Moin Moin! I've been all over Germany but hardly know the city my mother came from. Now feels like as good a time as any to set that right.🇪🇺😢 /1

With one day to go before the UK leaves the EU, we should remember again that all the polling suggests that the majority of the country still doesn’t want it to happen. Feel a bit in mourning for the future the country could have had.

I look at this and then think about the crass gimmick Farage pulled yesterday. No comparison is there? Zero grace. Zero class. The man’s a bin.
