This scenario is reminiscent of when Iraq Army first retook Walid. Their support came from a local tribal force called the Desert Hawks (unrelated to Syria). Back then the assaults would originate from Syria as well. Seems ISIS wants to punch a hole and get back to Anbar.

According to Security Media 4 Guards wounded including 1 Officer, they belonged to 4th Brigade, 3rd Regiment. The attack was against a Guard position north of the Walid Crossing border port itself.

Looking back at the initial report, they actually didn't specify which direction the assault came from, just that it happened north of Walid. There were number of ISIS active around Akashat surroundings but they weren't heard from since summer. Typically it was IEDs / ambushes.
