      Tom K. Wong Retweeted ICE

@ICEgov/@DHSgov is using the tragic murder of an elderly woman by an undocumented immigrant to criticize sanctuary policies. Their playbook: exploit tragedies when they occur and attribute the causes of these tragedies to policies it objects to #LetsTalkDataNotSoundBites 1/https://twitter.com/ICEgov/status/1218986485057277957 …

      Tom K. Wong added,

ICE Acting Director Albence: "NY’s sanctuary policies willfully released a criminal illegal alien now charged w/ murder. How many of these preventable tragedies are you willing to accept @nycmayor? ICE is issuing subpoenas because our answer is none." #nyc https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-issues-subpoenas-obtain-information-refused-under-ny-sanctuary-policies …

To begin, the folks I know in the @NYCMayor's office condemn this incident and all violent crimes and want to see the perpetrators, regardless of immigration status, criminally prosecuted 2/

Turning to the data, using @ICEgov/@DHSgov's own data obtained via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, I found that crime is lower and economies are stronger in sanctuary versus comparable non-sanctuary counties 3/pic.twitter.com/ooM9mcmM1m

This led the @washingtonpost to factcheck the administration's claims that sanctuary policies "breed crime." The punchline: the president and @ICEgov/@DHSgov were wrong https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2017/02/08/trumps-claim-that-sanctuary-cities-breed-crime/ … 4/

Myself @lorenc2, #BenjaminGonzalezObrien, @danmartinezUA, and other colleagues have similarly found that there's either no statistically significant relationship between sanctuary policies and increased crime or that sanctuary policies are associated with less crime 5/

In newer research, I've found that local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement officials has "chilling effects" on a broad range of the day-to-day behaviors of undocumented immigrants, including crime reporting 6/pic.twitter.com/2qKAMTAmVq

This led to another @washingtonpost @monkeycageblog article. The headline says it all: "Sanctuary cities don't breed crime. They Encourage people to report it." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2018/04/24/sanctuary-cities-dont-breed-crime-they-encourage-people-to-report-crime/ … 7/

In even newer research, I've found that local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities undermines community trust in law enforcement. Our new article in @PoPpublicsphere @CUP_PoliSci https://buff.ly/35P7UCd  8/pic.twitter.com/nBYDwJG8an

@ICEgov @DHSgov @DHS_Wolf @DHSMcAleenan Let's talk about making more data publicly available. Data do not have political affiliations... the data are what the data are and we're trained to see when the "books are being cooked." Let's get back to evidence-based policymaking 9/

While we're at it, we should also have this conversation in my own backyard. @SupFletcher has been leading the fight in the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to push back against misinformed opinions from his colleagues #FactsStillMatter https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/commentary/story/2019-12-04/commentary-why-joining-trump-sanctuary-city-lawsuit-is-a-waste-of-local-resources … /end
