Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf: "I am proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city. We believe sanctuary cities are safer cities. We embrace the diversity in Oakland and we do not think it is appropriate for us to use local resources to do the government's failed immigration work."pic.twitter.com/BuCcPPBHzO

analysis of FBI crime data by
@TomWongPhD@UCSD finds counties designated as “sanctuary” areas by ICE typically experience significantly lower rates of all types of crime, including lower homicide rates, than comparable non-sanctuary counties https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/01/27/trump-says-sanctuary-cities-are-hotbeds-of-crime-data-say-the-opposite/?utm_term=.665b4714dfce …2 replies 1 retweet 0 likes -

Thank you for the sources.. I still dont understand or see clearly outlined which cities they are using as "sanctuary cities" and which are "comparable non-sanctuary cities," which obviously is a huge factor in how the data skews.

How localities respond to detainer and notification requests are not likely top of mind when the public hears the term "sanctuary policies," but such policies shape the contours of local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement /3

Despite the actual policies on the ground, the term "sanctuary" seems to have turned into shorthand for any locality that does not fully agree with the administration's immigration agenda /end
