    Deep thought. If the GOP does succeed in destroying all but the appearance of democracy in the US, it will be a long, tragic struggle to get it back, if we ever do. The Civil War did not end. It merely shifted fronts and tactics.

    Dear Abby, my GOP friends keep telling me that Democrats are sexual; predators and "grooming" young kids for perversion, but every time I see a news story about someone convicted of horrible child abuse it's a Republican! Why is the media not focusing on the real predators?

    Just as a reminder, when a white supremacist slaughtered 49 Muslims at two mosques in New Zealand in 2019, he said that “the person that has influenced me above all was Candace Owens.” She already knows where this kind of hate speech leads. She doesn’t care.

    Thanks to GOP assets Sinema and Manchin.

    NEW: Congressional Democrats had a 12-point generic ballot lead over the GOP in December among recipients of the expanded child tax credit. That benefit has dried up, and now congressional Republicans have the advantage with this group of voters.

    Deep thought: A critical failure point 4 the Weimar Republic was its judiciary, which retained its Kaiserene judges after the fall of the monarchy. Those holdover judges actively aided in right's attempts to undermine democracy. The US currently faces a very similar problem.

    One thing I come across regularly in the archives are letters from everyday women telling their abortion stories before Roe. The hurdles & humiliations they overcame to get a simple medical procedure are staggering. And that horrific past is fast becoming present again...

    I'm sure this has been noted elsewhere, but MIT's graduate students have voted to unionize--by a significant majority. 75% of eligible voters (3,823) cast ballots. 1,785 yea, 912 no–2-1, near as dammit. ~1/2 of grad students were not eligible to vote (envelope-back calculation)

    Thread. We think kids are blank slates. Nope. They don't know as much as grownups do, but the stuff they do know they really get. They get when grownups are bullshitting. They don't know what to do with that knowledge, often, and that can cause enormous pain. But they know.

    Making children with a dawning sense of their own identity think that that identity is undiscussible and thus presumably disgraceful is a horrible sin.

    2/ And yes, I know there are complexities. And there are good people with whom I disagree profoundly about almost everything who are working very hard in some of the reddest, hardest hit states to reduce gun suicide rates. But the simple basic relationship remains.

    Your occasional reminder that the GOP is a death cult: More guns increases the risk of gun suicide. The radical embrace of the gun in current GOP politics will yield lot of dead people, at least half of whom, maybe more, will die by their own hands.

    I repeat myself, but as much as one half, maybe more, of the official GOP is functioning as a fifth column, hostile to democracy in general and US national security and other interests in particular. Patriots don't vote Republican.

    JUST IN: 63 Republicans just voted against a House resolution expressing support for NATO and principles of democracy.
