I made so many mistakes in my first crack at this tweet that I deleted and started over. Biggest mistake: not including the name of his wonderful Pickett's Charge, which is not a historical novel.

My pal has a new book, The Epicureans. Like his prior 2, Land O' Goshen & Pickett's Charge, it's a fairy tale deeply rooted in the Southern soil and the scary stories of his Alabama upbringing. This one's about rich people who eat children. Non-metaphorically.

Some people are making an argument here that the story directly addresses -- that the photo should be suppressed out of respect for the families. If you want to know what the families really think, watch the final episode of Spike Lee's doc on HBO. They talk about it on camera.

I have been told that has lifted the paywall on "The Falling Man" so I'm posting the link. Thanks all.

I grew up on Long Island, where 9/11 happened yesterday. I wanted to write about that -- about never forgetting -- so in June I went to watch the cops and the firemen play football. They gave me a story about grief and loss and, of course, breaking balls.

I'm not happy with Esquire's decision to keep the Falling Man behind a paywall this year, but I don't work there anymore and I have no say. I am happy, however, with the work of on the story of how that story came to be.

My pal Kevin Van Valkenburg wrote this last night after watching Naomi Osaka’s press conference. (Yes, that’s right: last night.) Like a lot of Kevin’s work, it is an expertly written argument in favor of treating those who play games for our entertainment with compassion.

Donald Newlove was a really good writer and Those Drinking Days, written in an irreducible voice, was perhaps the first memoir I ever read, along with Frank Conroy’s Stop-Time. I wish I’d known he was still alive. RIP.

Mary Ruefle’s erasure poem on the wall of The Frost House. Captures the enormity of this moment’s grief & sorrow.

In today's edition of 's "Red Hand Files," someone asks if he's concerned by rumors that the COVID vaccine deadens the soul. His answer should be everywhere: "I suspect the soul is robust enough to stand its ground against a remedy that will save so many lives."

On Long Island, distance is not measured in miles but time and effort. 20 minutes: “no problem.” 30 minutes: “Pain the ass.” 45 minutes: “Really?” An hour: “City” or “Hamptons.” To this day, I have no idea of the actual distance between any two points.
