Trump posted a new Game of Thrones-themed meme 5 hours ago, shortly after his "presser" with leaders of the Border Patrol union. Twitter is having fun noting that the wall comes down in Season 7 of the show, but there's a more important way you should think about this... /1pic.twitter.com/qIinvkwaMp

The Border Patrol union in 2016 opened their podcast called "The Green Line" by playing the oath taken by the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones. The implication--obviously--is that Border Patrol agents view themselves as akin to the Night's Watch. /2

In describing why he left DHS over Trump's family separation policy, @scottshuchart perfectly explains why it's disturbing that the Border Patrol identifies with "a band of warrior monks" sworn "to protect a magical kingdom from an army of ice zombies." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2018/10/25/feature/civil-servants-said-separating-families-was-illegal-the-administration-ignored-us/?utm_term=.c19d950af4ac … /3

"If federal law enforcement agents see Central American children as the moral equivalent of the frozen undead, we can’t expect them to understand intuitively how to detain and process them humanely without training, guidance and leadership." /4

So I'm happy to chuckle for a second about him using a meme about the wall when we know the wall came down in the show. But mostly I'm thinking about how this further reveals the insidious influence that dehumanizing rhetoric and ideas have on inhumane policies and practices. /5

For more on how dehumanizing language can lead to very dark places, see this excellent oped by Emile Bruneau at @Beyond_Conflict /6https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2018/05/18/why-it-matters-when-the-president-calls-people-even-violent-gang-members-animals/?utm_term=.201efaf6b643 …

          2) Now look at what scholars have said about walls as political totems and theater pieces. Many white evangelical Trump voters believe the wall has deep cultural significance, per @robertpjones. It's uncanny how well Trump taps into these wellsprings: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/02/walls-around-trump-are-crumbling-evangelicals-may-be-his-last-resort/?utm_term=.77b5dd42914d … pic.twitter.com/lObjV0GMK4

Not to mention a good portion of the Night’s Watch are criminals whose crimes were so bad they would have been executed if they hadn’t gone to the Wall.

Going further down the nerdy path, a reform-minded Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch realized that the wildlings were fleeing from a violent thread and could contribute to society. So he let them in.

It also reveals a new plan of communication: videos, filmed events and pressers in the WH that provide no chance to question Trump, and OMG, posters with dangerous implicit messages and themes.

It’s pretty grotesque. Just a day ago I was wondering if they see Central American people as wildlings who are undeserving of humane treatment (despite the fact that wildlings are excellent and far more free than most in Westeros)
