I am glad to share my first big report with on how the Syrian conflict transformed Syria's southern border periphery (Dara and Quneitra) into a zone of regional contention. In this thread I'll highlight some of the main points of the paper

Before the war, most Syrians had a fine sense for the informal logic of the police state. Now, the rules have grown looser, decentralized, and unpredictable, and Syrians hoping to return and reintegrate can trip up with terrible consequences. :

.'s on how Syria's rules for acceptable political behavior have become less intelligible and navigable over the course of the war, particularly for Syrians who spent years outside the system and attempt now to re-enter:

While Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, has destroyed large amounts of Armenian tanks and materiel, they have not made decisive gains on the ground. And in Karabakh, winter is coming. My analysis from Stepanakert:

Absolutely no evidence of this. The PKK are barely able to move around in Qandil due to Turkish drones over their hideouts. How are they supposed to travel through the hostile KRG into Iraq & Iran? Utter nonsense.

Apparently Syrian National Army fighters (a Turkish-backed force) film themselves in Azeri uniform, near the Iranian border. The man says in Arabic "Armenians... God is great. Liberation," then flashes the grey wolf sign used by the Turkish far-right.

certainly not Nagorno-Karabakh, must Afrin I mean Idlib I mean no actually these are Syrian regime Lebanese PKK ASALA members pretending to be SNA by wearing Azerbaijani border guard fatigues while making grey wolves signs

The first video showing Syrian mercenaries in direct combat has been leaked from Azerbaijan. It’s unknown what date it’s from, but it’s conclusive evidence that Syrian fighters are involved in infantry combat on the front lines against Armenian fighters.

An interesting analysis by Maxim Suchkov on whether and would face off in the Caucasus, and how they might do that.

Long story short 👉 this sheikh is, I think, trying to sprinkle legitimacy on the disturbing fact that Syrians are being used as mercenaries to fight other peoples’ wars, in a land other than theirs. Truely saddening.

Similarly, this journal article argues that “93% out of more than 7.5 million Azerbaijanis have a Muslim background and from this majority 65% to 75% are connected with Shi'ite traditions.” and adds that "4% to 6% ... may be called 'active' believers"

He claims that pple of Azerbaijan were forced to convert to Shiism. Otherwise they'd be Sunnite. Then the rubbish starts. He wrongly claims %50 of the population is Shiites and $50 Sunnites. He's wrong on many levels. The reality is more complex. check what Thomas De Waal writes:

He agrees with scholars that unlike fighting in , fighting in in and is “fard kifaya”(i.e. not obligatory for Muslims). So technically he is not saying all should go and fight THOUGH he seems very supportive of the general idea esp in the case of Azrbijn

He says our war [assuming he has appointed himself as the representative of all Muslims] is in and as much as it is in the levant. For him, all these wars are one and are against the crusaders. But there is an interesting twist in the story ...

The article claims that this meeting was hosted by a faction in the -Backed National Syrian Army in Afrin. And that he was speaking in the presence of many fighters (two sources of mine confirm that). The article also claimed that the sheikh is affiliated with the faction

This sheikh is trying to legitimize fighters’ presence in and by resorting to religious justifications (fighting crusaders!) and distorted historical facts. Place: Afrin, Syria, controlled by Turkish backed forces. My thoughts 👇
