Phone-based 3DoF makes sense to me because it's a "might as well" proposition. If you already have the expensive bits why not add VR?

I just don't see it happening, gear vr doesn't see much use with the gamer and non gamer alike.

Based on what? GearVR is far and away the best selling VR headset (if you don't count Cardboard)

Sorry, I missed something. The 3DoF headset mentioned in the article is standalone. No PC or phone required.

The real market is "bigger screen". Doesn't even have to be VR, just needs to be a desktop size screen visible from mobile.

Wondering too. Maybe iOS / Mac users who want to dabble in VR without an extraneous OS? Or low-end mobile phone/PC users?

Education/Institutional purchases? Less moving pieces than mobile phone/headset combination and essentially 1/3 the price.
