The last time I built one by-hand was 2006, but I am glad to see the overall user experience doesn't appear to have gotten much more complicated in the interim.
Kernel building has its uses, as otherwise I wouldn't have noticed bpfilter yet

I wasn't saying that it didn't. :) I just had this terrible fear nagging at me that somehow the process had gotten worse with the increased userspace integration and attendant complexity found in modern Linux environments. e.g., hackery around shrinking kernel image, etc.
