What's a planetary encounter like? This is a pretty accurate representation of the New Horizon Arrokoth encounter by (Henry Throop) who took all the pictures and put them together into this wonderful video. It really seemed about this fast!

Just had a look at "Universe" a gorgeous Canadian B&W documentary from 1960, which had heavy influence on the production of "2001," included later important work by the narrator. But OMG - the astronomer clambering around the telescope - OK...

Can we please dispense with this nonsense?

So got out my old AAVSO alpha Ori chart and observation log ~ '73-'75. Nice to see that my estimated mags are pretty close to the mean (they never gave feedback then). Chart shows using Procyon, Rigel, and Aldebaran as standards.

Well, I'm partial to this little map I made of stars within a parsec of the M31 black hole using the Lick version of Mongo

So rather than working on what I should, why not watch 4 youtube videos on how to play double thirds on the piano? Handy for Chopin Etude 25/6 (which is far beyond my skills). One trick is to rotate your right hand left even as ascending the keyboard.

Just finished the task of inviting speakers to next year's colloquium series. Tedious, but it never approached the trick of getting Richard Gott out to Tucson to speak on time travel, where I invited him 6 months after his talk actually took place:

OK & - while you're busy making fun of Macs, you are completely forgetting how innovative they can be. They're a decade ahead of both of ye:

Never got to see WFPC1, despite being there for 2 thermal-vac tests at JPL. It was always in the chamber. Pics - Sandy Faber & I running tests, and standing in front of the chamber. 1988, I was 31, half of my present age.

This only a partial reproduction of the Saturn V firing room at KSC, but gosh it took an awful lot of engineers to light off one of those beasts.

Planetary science is big in Tucson, so it's no surprise to run into contractors like this, in this case the group subcontracted to Dragonfly to ensure that the landing sites are OK. Cassini imaging will be pretty old by the time they get to Titan, so you want to be ready.

The best part of any movie is the scene where they fight over how to do the image processing:

Sputnik Planitia shows itself in another converting kitchen confection - in this case chocolate pudding. With Annika home from ASU she gets “pudding vat.” I asked her if she wanted fudge lumps in it, but that idea didn’t fly.
