Calling it "the computer *analogy*" is on a continuum with this kind of thing:https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-does-not-process-information-and-it-is-not-a-computer …

Because something appears to do the same task as a mind does not mean it is thinking. John Searle came up with the Chinese room argument to help us think about the difference. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_room …

Right. But it’s about the best explanation of what’s going on. That argument can apply to other people (humans), too. It’s an argument some humans might be zombies. Actually in both cases: apparent AGI and humans prejudicing one “seeming” over another is racist.

That’s no clearer, I fear :) U even say “Thinking in terms of computation is attractive” *as if* it’s just a mode/model. Okay: if you’re not a realist, I understand. Like: “particle theory” is just a model chemistry uses. Some think: No! Actual particles! Not “think in terms of”.

No one knows even the most basic things about how brains process and store information, it's hubris to suggest you know it's a computer. We know near nothing about how brains work.

“No one knows even the most basic things about how VASCO’s work, it’s hubris to suggest you know it’s known physics. We know near nothing about how things-without-known-explanation work”. Must be mystical stuff & non-science? Aliens? Spirits? I can’t rule it out. Except: science!

Is the conjecture that the mind is a computer based on the fact that it can perform physical tasks as abstractions? This is what I took from your physical counting with an abacus example. Or is there something more or am I making an error?
-
It was a conjecture when Turing first guessed it. All knowledge is conjectural. But if one assumes quantum physics is correct then it’s not merely a (wild) conjecture. It’s a conclusion given quantum physics. That’s what my post tries to explain (possibly very poorly apparently?)

The brain may well be a computer, but the mind is not.
-
The mind is the software running on the hardware that is the brain. Together, they constitute a computer (without software, a “computer” is just a heater).
