Do your own work. It's been said many times, but it's easy to forget when you hear a compelling pitch, especially when lots of other people you respect are getting on board. Trust, but verify. Do your own work. Lesson learned.
It's pretty pervasive. Have you read Influence, by Robert Cialdini? It helped me a lot with developing psychological checks. You'll never be fully immune, but you'll at least have some defenses. Do you read filings back to front?

It's on my list now. And yes, I do read the filings completely. I've found more than a few thesis-killers buried in the notes.
