Do your own work. It's been said many times, but it's easy to forget when you hear a compelling pitch, especially when lots of other people you respect are getting on board. Trust, but verify. Do your own work. Lesson learned.
I'm sympathize. I solely listened to others to begin. It made me too trusting, too complacent, and too lazy. But it was easy, and the people selling me sounded smart. Smart doesn't make you right in this game. I learned this the hard way.

Very true. I'm just disappointed in myself because I know this, and still got suckered in.

It's pretty pervasive. Have you read Influence, by Robert Cialdini? It helped me a lot with developing psychological checks. You'll never be fully immune, but you'll at least have some defenses. Do you read filings back to front?
