Do your own work. It's been said many times, but it's easy to forget when you hear a compelling pitch, especially when lots of other people you respect are getting on board. Trust, but verify. Do your own work. Lesson learned.
One of the big changes to my process of analysis that I'll be sharing in my annual report is that I'm changing my views on VIC analyses. They're no longer the exception. I'm only going to read them after I've done my own research. The linking/loving tendency is just too deadly.

The only position I was worried about during last month's pullback was the one where I hadn't done enough work myself, and was too reliant on other people. The names where I really dug in and knew the thesis, by contrast, didn't bother me.

Just sold that one position at a loss - costly lesson, but will be worth it in the long run. Investing is hard.
