In tomorrow’s election in Belarus an opposition movement led by defiant women will likely get more votes than an aging authoritarian president who got COVID wrong. Rigging and tech blackouts and repression will follow.

Belarus is a frightening place. I visited in the early 2000’s. Old Soviet ideology is ingrained In Eastern Europe, but it is very palpable in Belarus. I did NOT feel safe and was aware of being watched the entire time I was there. Hope good happens there.

As in the last century, '20 means spread of right wing authoritarianism. Hopefully on November 3rd an emergency break will activate, giving everyone hope in democratic institutions and blocking this senseless tendency.
