In Russia they created a sculpture park of old Stalin statues. Sounds about right-provide a history lesson and context for next generations.

The "politics of eternity" is the hallmark philosophy of the ultraconservatives, Religiojs Right, and I dare say, the neo con's. This is why they so liberally attack the pro-life movements of social, fiscal and environmental justice.

For a historian it might be that. For people who have to or plan to act decisively, history is a resource used selectively, and construed as needed for present purposes of action. In other words, the way history is told by diff. people is an instrument of their power to them.

Even historians have goals and values their (hi)storytelling serves, which they may not have reflected on historically, imho, often masked behind claims of 'truth' ...
