Lawyer here. I think anyone that’s ever watched a TV drama knows that what transpired in the Senate was in no way equivalent to a “trial.” No opening statement reminiscent of trial. No presentation of witnesses with cross-examination. No closing argument. No jury instructions.

Here the outcome was predetermined. That’s called a show trial. Sadly, that’s something that I thought I would never live to see here. But I’ve seen courts appoint presidents and courts rule that money is speech. The republic that I grew up in died in the last century.
